GUIDELINES FOR AUTHORS ON PREPARING MANUSCRIPTS

MANUSCRIPT SUBMISSION
Psychiatric Services uses a web-based submission system to accelerate the peer review process and shorten the time from manuscript submission to publication decision. Thus, the journal will no longer accept manuscripts and letters by mail.

AUTHORSHIP, DISCLOSURE, AND COPYRIGHT TRANSFER FORMS
Review INFORMATION FOR CONTRIBUTORS on the journal’s website for policy information. Upon acceptance of a manuscript, all authors must submit Authorship, Disclosure, and Copyright Tranfer forms.

NIH-FUNDED RESEARCH
The National Institutes of Health (NIH) Revised Policy on Enhancing Public Access to Archived Publications Resulting from NIH-Funded Research (Public Access Policy), which took effect on April 7, 2008, requires all investigators funded by NIH to submit or have submitted for them their final peer-reviewed manuscript upon acceptance for publication to the National Library of Medicine’s (NLM) PubMed Central (PMC) to be made publicly available no later than 12 months after the official date of publication. Psychiatric Services acknowledges that the Author retains the right to provide a copy of the manuscript to NIH upon acceptance for publication (i.e., after all modifications from the peer review process but before copyediting, formatting, and production work performed to produce the final published article) for public archiving in PubMed Central. Except for special circumstances in which specific arrangements have been made, Psychiatric Services does not deposit manuscripts on behalf of authors. NIH has developed a password-protected, Web-based NIH Manuscript Submission system to implement the NIH Public Access Policy.

COMPLIMENTARY COPIES AND AUTHOR REPRINTS
All authors receive a complimentary copy of the issue in which their article is published. All copies are mailed to the corresponding author shortly after the first of the month.

No author reprints are furnished gratis. A reprint order form will be sent to the corresponding author before publication of the article. Reprints should be ordered after the journal has been published, when page numbers are available. Articles, columns, book reviews, and letters to the Editor can be downloaded by subscribers from the journal website at ps.psychiatryonline.org.

Reviewers

BECOMING A REVIEWER
Individuals interested in reviewing for Psychiatric Services should contact the Editorial Officepsjournal{at}psych.org.

Abstracts of articles within a reviewer’s given area of expertise are sent via e-mail to the reviewer. Reviewers are asked to complete the review within three weeks. The e-mail provides instructions for declining the invitation to review and for accessing the manuscript on Manuscript Central.

COMPETING INTERESTS
Most competing interests, financial or otherwise, do not disqualify a reviewer from participating in the peer review process, but the journal requests that reviewers indicate any conflict they may have in reviewing a particular manuscript. Reviewers who have a competing interest can decline to review and inform the Editorial Officepsjournal{at}psych.org. Reviewer status is not affected in any way.

CONFIDENTIALITY
Psychiatric Services uses a double-blind review. In submitting their manuscripts for review, authors entrust the journal with the results of their scientific work and creative effort, on which their reputation and career may depend. Authors’ rights may be violated by disclosure of the confidential details of the review of their manuscript. Reviewers should never copy, share, or discuss a manuscript under review or the data reported in it with anyone without written permission of the journal’s Editor and the authors.
